Masseys Confirmed!


We have confirmed Ed and Bernie Massey for the last weekend in February! This is huge for Chattanooga!

Ed Massey is a sculptor, painter, and author whose work serves as social commentary of contemporary issues. His personal website is www.edmassey.com. Bernie Massey is a social entrepreneur and founder of the Center for American Studies and Culture. Click this link for full bios. The Massey brothers founded Portraits of Hope (www.portraitsofhope.org) in 1995 and have since conducted art education and therapy projects with children in hospitals and schools. Was offering a bit of history. Photo above is an Ed Massey piece: "Agua Dulce" from 1995.


This one to the right is from 2007 and is much closer to the kind of marks they typically use for their collaborative pieces. It is called "Inertia in Motion" and there are many versions of it. I feel likewise.









The one to the left is an early installation piece: "The Corporate Ladder" from 1990. Ed did many pieces that were political commentaries including (see below) "Morality/Mortality" about sexual assault. There were versions in five cities on exhibit concurrently in 1994. I remember seeing this one when I lived in NYC and would have had no idea that I would be back in Chattanooga, doing what I do now ...

Moving forward!

With the first grant weekend successfully behind us, I am moving forward with plans for the next visiting artists. I originally proposed 3 separate workshop weekends, but I have talked to CreateHere about modifying the grant to 2 weekends. I spent one third of the money on the cheapest weekend, and I would rather go all out on one other weekend than do 2 weekends half-way. CreateHere is in agreement with me on this, so now the question is who to book for the remaining weekend.

My top choice is to bring in Ed and Bernie Massey of Portraits of Hope (www.portraitsofhope.org). This would be huge for Chattanooga! Their best-known project is Garden in Transit, which started on New York taxi cabs and has grown to include blimps and airplanes. The Massey brothers are currently in negotiations with NASA to send public art into space - too cool!





I am waiting to hear back from the Masseys to see if they would be willing to do the Chattanooga workshops. Below is the proposal I sent them, and it includes a rough outline of my goals for the weekend:

THINK BIG : Meet the Masseys

As a part of Frances McDonald’s CreateHere grant project for professional development in the creation of public art, she proposes the following weekend between Ed and Bernie Massey (Portraits of Hope) and Chattanooga’s public arts community.

Scope and goals

The grant project is designed to develop Frances’ potential as a facilitator of public art generated by nonprofessional artists. This involves not only developing herself as an artist and facilitator, it also involves educating and invigorating colleagues and collaborators—including artists, architects, planners, politicians, educators, and others interested in the creation of nonprofessional public art in Chattanooga. The proposed workshop seeks

· to raise local awareness of and boost enthusiasm for public art efforts, especially those involving challenged populations.

· to promote the exchange of ideas, the why’s and how’s of this genre.

· to explore, absorb and learn from the Massey’s model and their personas: philosophy, teaching methods, their BIG thinking and its logistics & marketing.

Proposed Schedule:

Saturday: Offering the Masseys a crash course on what is Chattanooga: its history, topography, industry, tourism, population dynamics, strengths and weaknesses, and its public art history, collections, and current initiatives.

· Driving, walking, seeing and hearing about the city.

· Meeting local leaders, planners, people who understand and articulate who we are.

Sunday

· More experience of Chattanooga

· Informal session with local professional artists to talk about issues pertinent to public art projects. Questions may include these: why create public art, why create collaborative art, what makes a project successful, what strategies allow successful facilitation?

Monday

Monday will begin with a public presentation of the Masseys’ work and will continue with generative work in how to implement their ideas and techniques locally.

· Formal presentation of the Massey brothers’ work to professional Chattanooga followed by a

· Charette to generate Massey flavored or other public art ideas. Their input on and shaping of our ideas would be of utmost value.

· Classroom time with elementary or middle school students to model the Masseys’ style and content when presenting their exploration of social issues classes.


Now I just have to wait for the Masseys' response. I expect to hear from them in the next day or so. I'll keep you all posted!

Graffiti Weekend Review

Now that Tion’s visit is over, I will try to recap a lot of what went down. Helen has pointed out to me that it’s super important not to sugarcoat any retelling and to be honest about any deficiencies. How else is CreateHere supposed to have an idea what its grantees may or may not be able to do? Process is hugely important and surely no one could fathom what the grantees must accomplish to do their utterly creative deeds…

We certainly did our utmost. This chapter of the grant was to bring Tion “Bukue” Torrence to Chattanooga for my and other artists’ professional development. I could go in search of an aerosol education outside of Chattanooga, but that would only make local matters worse. Presently, it’s hard to defend and practice public art that involves nonprofessional artists in Chattanooga. This is still a town of Artists with not much faith in artists. Bringing in well-known public art collaborators shows the city that what I do is in no way unique; people all over the world are seeing this “practice” as a solution to many social, urban and aesthetic problems. Here was the plan: schedule as many hip hop sourced activities as Tion could do, and share those workshops with others: Artists and artists. Then, use that background for Mark Making to do a public art project. Mixing a Mark Making project with my personal professional development was difficult; it is hard to keep separate who one is working for. Moneywise was easy, but my focus-wise was very difficult. I was constantly putting others’ educational needs before my own. Tion brought tons of merchandise and giveaways from his sponsors, and I even forwent getting a pair of Skull Candy ear buds so that others could have them.

For the workshop Wordplay 101 and the following day’s graff mural project, we had first approached Parks and Recreation, the idea being that they serve the same inner city children who we were trying to reach. We weren’t interested in convincing vandals not to commit their deeds, although that could be a byproduct of the weekend’s activities. Some of these graffiti writers are aging, can’t run as fast and have defendable day jobs. The main idea, though, was to enfranchise the wannabes, not only through the graff events but also through Tion’s Arts2Empire workshop and his role model example: 6 ft 3 (?), handsome, with long dreads, the baggy t and those loose pants that could probably hold a case of aerosol. He hasn’t done illegal graff in fifteen years and can argue why it’s dumb. He graffs, raps and skateboards. Every time he opened his mouth over the weekend, I was really struck by his incredible ability to articulate and the clarity of what he was saying. I do believe he’s on the fast track to Malcolm Gladwelldom.

Some obstacles along the way: My (crazy) idea and wish was that Parks and Rec could van their kids in for the workshops; we asked for 15 kids and wanted to round it out with other populations. I was incredibly naïve to think that could actually happen and received the “no” on Thursday evening before area schools went on fall break, just prior to Tion’s arrival. We put out the word about the workshops in a few schools and made calls to agencies suggested by the City. Previously, we had reached out to homeless agencies, tattoo parlors, and the graff artists we knew. I’ve heard from a couple of CreateHere people who thought we should’ve had higher numbers. Actually, for a workshop of this kind, I was satisfied. We ended up with 20 participants in the Wordplay 101 workshop, which is plenty, and about 30 people painted. I was, however, less thrilled with the small number that showed up for the unveiling and Block Party. It was Not Mainx24, but we all did dance like fiends. Six people attended Sunday’s workshop; I think everyone was worn out from a full day of painting Saturday!


Diversity of the participants was great; I was leery of the homeless in the same class as children…but my phone hasn’t rung yet. Billy, one of the participants and a client of the Community Kitchen, is actually a Hart Gallery art star; he had aerosol experience in a prior job, and his contribution was super helpful.

Thursday (10/21) evening’s screening of “Bomb It: The Global Graffiti Documentary” and the panel discussion that followed were well attended. We had about 35 people in the audience. The movie was grittier, grosser, and more laced with profanity than I had recalled. I was seeing the movie with the eyes of my dad who was in the audience. I was fairly horrified of what I was getting into and so glad the panel was even more pro-graff than me.

We had invited and had yeses from two local graff artists who did not attend. I missed the richness and roundness their remarks would have added to the debate, but what was said was fab, layered, many-sided, and diverse. The audience started adding their two cents, and the dialogue was lively and well-balanced.

To use grant money for graff workshops I found to be debatable and very edgy. Does it cause more vandalism? Yes, the act is kind of addictive, and yes, the rush of doing it furtively is a big factor for some. Being in the middle of the night hopefully in a place where you can hear many blocks away on a “canvas” hid from view, ie: necessarily dark out where you are painting black on black because the only light is from your cell phone screen: the outline of your piece.

Back to Parks and Rec, I did offer that Mark Making spend some time every month cleaning graff tags to demonstrate which side we are on and hopefully offer a carrot. We still want to do it...and I think we could match the paint better.

I want to include a letter whose author had to make this statement to warn me about possible negative repercussions. It’s actually quite thoughtful, and the person is clearly trying to protect me and Mark Making:

“I know part of the workshop may address the issue of how to control unwanted graffiti artists making their mark all over the city, but many people are concerned that this instruction may encourage “art work” where it is not desired…I hope this issue will receive your utmost attention, otherwise you may find the organization in an extremely defensive position of apologizing and correcting problems on properties that were not intended to be involved.”

To which I responded:

“Thank you for your concerns and I wholeheartedly agree with you. It's a fine line between advocating art of a graffiti style and encouraging vandalism. It's like "Drink Responsibly" on a liquor advertisement. There will always be vandals; we may inspire some to become legal- there are great advantages to that. There could be others who become inspired to do illegal activity because they are going to act out regardless of the context. It's hard to get people not to litter, not to play music too loud, not to drive cars that pollute.

“We (at Mark Making) believe this style, sourced in American inner city energy, can inspire many of our youth to make art that can be very beautiful. We want to offer opportunities for an empowerment that comes from having people hear one's "voice." The tree falling in the empty forest is rarely heard. Unseen Art doesn't inspire as much self confidence as art with an audience. Sneaky tags aren't usually art at all. I've heard graffiti artists complain that those give them a bad reputation.

“As far as the public is concerned, there are many closet graffiti fans who would enjoy seeing it done legally. The other side of the coin is that I think that people would notice more graffiti that was already there when the issue comes to their attention. It's hard to separate between the real issue and the perceived issue. PR can work both ways. I assure you that we will do our best to deter rather than inspire this style.”

Tion's Schedule


Thank you Jessica for your email. It would be much smarter to journal regularly... now you know it's 8:00 pm on Tuesday night and I'm playing catch up.

Thus said, I'm super excited about Tion's visit the weekend of Oct 23. See photo at left - is he not gorgeous ? The schedule is falling into place and he will be offering us much more than just bombing lessons. Here's what we have at this point plus some comments:

Thursday, Oct. 21 - 7:00 pm: We will screen "Bomb It" and have a Panel Discussion @ CreateHere. Through interviews and guerilla footage of graffiti writers in action on five continents, "Bomb It: The Global Graffiti Documentary," tells the story of graffiti from its origins in prehistoric cave paintings through its notorious explosion in New York City during the ‘70s and ‘80s, then follows the flames as they paint the globe. This cutting edge documentary tracks down today’s most innovative and pervasive street artists as they battle for control over the urban visual landscape. The screening will then be followed by a panel discussion answering the question "When does Graffiti serve the Public?" I hope to have distinguished guests as speakers. The evening will be a rare moment in Chattanooga's nightlife of alternative film. I'll pick up Tion at the airport late Thursday night.

Friday, Oct. 22 : I'll show Tion the lay of the land, where we'll be doing what, talk through his workshops, see if I need to dovetail, co-teach or just be around. At 5 pm we'll meet with our participants at CreateHere for the workshop. We'll work on my favorites: line, shape, color, texture....and look at cave paintings, calligraphy, and all things that culminate in today's aesthetic we call graffiti. The participating artists will work on their tags plus the "message" we'll be putting on the wall on Main St. I hate to start talking about that right now...it'll get long. Suffice it to say that this "wall" will be the first of many: we have found a Chattanooga chalkboard!


Saturday, Oct. 23: We'll sketch and paint that day on the wall first and then on 4 x 8 boards. We have been invited to put boards in a too cool place - more later - big and secret topic. After wo rk, we'll have an unveiling/block party. Speeches, awards, DJ, break dancing and any other moves that slide. It will be an A event. Tion will be the star of that show and will do a set of his own compositions. I've heard him rapping about graffiti on MySpace, quel mojo !!

Sunday, Oct. 24: Tion will do a skateboard demo at Chattown Skatepark, next to the First TN Pavillon. Afterward we'll head back to Main for another workshop, "Arts2Empire," and paint more boards. I'd really like us to paint the van too. I can't wait to sling some aerosol, I want to dance with the can :) Tion catches his flight out late afternoon; we then spend 3 days sorting through documentation.

Much has happened but I want to start by saying that Tion Bukue is the graffiti artist we are inviting to Chattanooga. We interviewed Caleb ("Aero"), Manuel Guerlis and Tion Bakue.

Manuel is from Wiesbaden and founded the MOS - Meeting of Styles - format: one giant graffiti festival in a host city that can offer preferably thousands of square feet of permitted space. Add to that many hopefully donated cases of aerosol. Invite international graffiti stars and they bring the music, groupies, galleries etc. There are maybe 10 per year worldwide, and Manuel is still the guy who helps the locals coordinate these things. I loved talking to him. He is very community minded and loves the democraticness of grafitti and the accessibility of it. He has a bundes job working for Lufthansa.

We also interviewed Caleb - "Aero" - who is Manuel's
counterpart MOS-wise in the States. Caleb is beautiful and paints beauty. He is of Hawaiian origin and is an ex- model. I also loved his philosophy, and he is particularly concerned over the eco status and safety of use of aerosol. He started a company called Blubber Colors Spray Paint.

Tion is a professional hip hop manager, writes,performs and records his own songs, skateboards, and does graffiti. He sees all these activities as one aesthetic taking direction through the hand, the voice, the body to express graffiti, hip hop, dance and skate boarding. This urban aesthetic is one that emerges from the street, not the classroom. It is improvised, autobiographical, requires no education, can be practiced by anyone, can be recorded, photographed, vimeoed etc and distributed world wide without that person's mother knowing anything about it. These raps and tags are personal expressions ready to go international with a simple keystroke.


Tion teaches the disciplines in a parallel way starting with a workshop called Wordplay 101. What is the spoken word, the pictorated word, the word as it moves through the body. His other workshop is Art2Empire now that one can selfexpress via this aesthetic, how does one make a living. I love his practical side. How do we make these things work !!
We are booking him for the weekend of Oct 23. We will have the two workshops mentioned above plus a more traditional art class that I will coteach. The workshops will culminate in a graffiti project at the Hart Gallery on Main St. The Heavillon's are allowing MM chalkboard curatorial privileges on their outside wall. Sat night Oct 23rth, we will graffiti their wall, some boards and my van. We will finish the evening with some kind of street party with music etc.
Sometime over the weekend, I want Tion to do a skateboard demo. The next thing is booking the flight, the class space, party time etc.
The important next thing is considering the audience for this workshop/weekend. We want to reach urban teens who are artitsts trying not to be vandals, vandals who could be more interesting as artists, teens who are drawn to the aesthetic who could enjoy a visual arts way of expression. We want to attract tatoo artists, pro and non pro, students who doodle in their books, students and pros from the domains of interior design, architecture and fine arts. We want to attract those interested in american spoken traditions, hip hop artists, south siders, politicians, region planners etc.

So far, we plan to meet with Greta Hayes over at Parks and Recs to find out how to get the word out to our urban unenfranchised youth.

Hi, I'm Katherine. I'm helping Frances with her grant project, so I'll be making an appearance on here now and then. Last weekend, we had a graffiti booth at SwaggFest, a Parks & Rec event for urban youth. We brought aerosol for kids to try their hand at graffiti art and handed out fliers about Tion's visit. Hoping some of the kids will show up for the October workshops!

What this grant is for....

My grant is to bring to Chattanooga 3 well known American public artists for weekend workshops and public art planning sessions. These goals are

- To offer to myself and others opportunites to learnabout learning different techniques, methods, and the philosophical thoughts driving them to make collaborative public art

- To bring awareness to the general public that collaborative public art can create ownership and empowerment for those who create it while beautifying the city.

- To build on the present growing excitement surrounding public art started during the Corker administration and currently carried forward by Public Art Chattanooga.

The three artists will be in Chattanooga for three different weekends doing presentations and workshops. We would also work on how could their philosophy, methods and techniques be applied in a Chattanooga context.

I’d like to introduce these Artists:

Kauai Caleb Kaui or tag name "Aero" is becoming a household name as one of the most active and talented international aerosol artist of his time. Better known as the Walt Disney of graffiti Caleb Aero has broken the negative barriers surrounding graffiti with his universal artistic appeal. At the forefront of the aerosol age Aero is bringing this medium to new heights and audiences around the world. By introducing the vision of Aerosol Art Parks™ he has found a solution to help funnel our youth's curiosity with spray paint in a positive direction. Aero is also the first and only aerosol artist in America to have created his own personal line of ECO friendly spray paint called Blubber Colors Magic™. With over a thousand murals painted in the last decade Caleb Aero has established himself as a future legend in the aerosol art game. Whether its teaching an aerosol art workshops™ to high school students or organizing aerosol art events™ for other aspiring artist to gather. In 1995, Ed Massey and Bernie Massey founded Portraits of Hope, continuing their utilization of art and poignant visual imagery for large-scale projects of social consequence.

Portraits of Hope projects culminate in the visual transformation of public environments and have involved everything from blimps, buildings and tugboats to airplanes and NASCAR racecars. They are currently working on a series of lifeguard stands that will dot the California coast with their figurations and they have plans to partner with NASA to launch collaborative public art into outer space.To date, tens of thousands of children and adults across the United States and abroad have been involved in their educational activities and projects.
